Tequila and shots are natural allies, and when these bad boys come out it’s a sign that the party’s really getting started. When somebody declares, “let’s have a tequila shot!” you probably think of a straight pour of tequila with lime and salt on the side. But, a tequila shot can be much more than that.
Originating from Mexico, Tequila is distilled from the fermented sugars of an agave plant. It comes as a white and dark spirit, and has been produced since the 16th century. It’s great in a cocktail or served with mixers, but aficionados would agree that tequila is best served as a shot. From fruity concoctions to recipes with a spicy kick, there’s a tequila shot for every occasion.
For World Tequila Day 2021, check out the best 3 ways to take a tequila shot!
Straight Tequila Shot
Back to basics: Depending on your quality of tequila, this classic tequila shot goes down smoothly or with a signature zing! While it’s a fun activity and an amusing way to drink your tequila, there is a certain purpose behind the method: the salt cools the burn and the lime boosts the flavour of the tequila.

You probably don’t need an explanation of the classic tequila shot in great detail, but for first timers: if the shot glass isn’t rimmed with salt, make a fist and pour a small amount of salt onto the flat part. Just lick the salt, down the tequila shot, and suck on the lime. You can also rim the glass with some salt or sugar if you are feeling fancy.
Ingredients
- Patrón Silver tequila: 45mL
- Lime or lemon wedge
- Pinch kosher salt, or sea salt
Sangrita
Going traditional (and not to be confused with “Sangria”), it’s always fun to make a Sangrita. You’ve likely experienced the spicy tomato shot, but that is more of an Americanised drink and the authentic shot is way better!

The original Sangrita still has that spicy kick and demands a post-tequila chaser. Yet, it uses a grenadine base and orange juice with a dash or two of hot sauce. Unlike a classic tequila shot, the Sangrita is meant to complement the tequila instead of erasing its taste with a peppery flavour. Take the shot of tequila followed by another shot of the remaining spicy ingredients.
Ingredients
- Patrón Silver tequila: 30 mL
- Freshly squeezed orange juice: 30 mL
- Freshly squeezed lime juice: 25 mL
- Grenadine: 15 mL
- Hot sauce / Tabasco Sauce: 3 dashes
- Jalapeño pepper (optional): 1 slice
Lychee Tequila Shot
Tequila shots also have a softer side and the lychee tequila reveals this exquisitely. This drink needs just two ingredients and once you feel a taste for the sweet nectar of lychee and tequila, it’s very tough to stop! In that respect lies the danger here: it’s almost too sweet so that it really masks the flavour of the tequila! Mix it 1:1 and down she goes!

Undoubtedly, World Tequila Day is the celebration of this classic drink: tequila. Some other ways to enjoy tequila shots include in a Tequila Slammer (tequila mixed with spicy ginger ale) or a mini Tequila Sunrise Shot (scaled down from a normal Tequila Sunrise, but with the tequila itself scaled up!) Don’t forget to say “cheers” or “Salud” in Spanish before taking your shots!
