Vodka

Originating from Russia and Poland, Vodka is a clear distilled spirit that is made from water and potatoes or grains. It can be distilled from just about anything though and you will find some vodka’s created from beets and grapes. The name ‘vodka’ is derived from the Russian word ‘voda’, meaning “water” in English. The alcohol content for vodka commonly sits between 40 and 50 percent and is commonly distilled at least three times before drinking. Though it can be distilled up to five times or more. Unlike other alcoholic beverages, vodka does not require ageing unlike wine or rum. It is ready to drink straight away after distilling. Traditionally, vodka is drunk straight (shot or sipped) and is typically kept chilled in a freezer. Vodka is a popular choice for cocktail recipes and is the main ingredient for cocktails such as a bloody mary, cosmopolitan, screwdriver and vodka martini. Popular vodka brands in Australia are Absolut, Smirnoff, Belvedere, and Grey Goose. Vodka is odourless and tasteless which makes it easier to point out against other spirits such as gin which is compounded differently. However, when you drink vodka, you can expect some heat. This is relating directly to the burn you can get on either your tongue or back of the throat when it is drunk straight. This burn can be a great way to determine the premium factor of the brand. Less expensive vodka brands can give the burn in the mouth and throat whilst more high end brands generally have a smooth and subtle feeling in your mouth and throat.
